ABOUT THE AUTHOR

David Larkin has had a lifetime career on the railways and started photographing railway rolling stock in the late 1960s when most people were concentrating on the demise of the steam locomotive.
Over a period of a quarter of a century, David amassed a huge collection of black and white images of mainly railway freight stock, covering the last survivors of the big four right through to the big new bogie air-braked designs of the early 1990s.
His early published material includes a short series of booklets under the Bradford Barton imprint and the "Wagon Page" series that ran for a short while in the Railway Modeller in the early 1970s. He was also involved in the OPC title "An Illustrated History of BR Wagons" published in 1985.
The Working Wagon series, published by ourselves, began in 1998 with Volume 1 (1968-1973), which is currently out of print. Volumes, 2, 3 and 4 are still available, as detailed here. The images and information contained in the volumes are invaluable to both the railway historian and the railway modeller, illustrating the stock in its everyday working condition.

WORKING WAGONS Volume 1
1968 - 1973 by David Larkin

ISBN - ---------------
This first volume in the Working Wagons series covers the period from 1968 to 1973 and illustrates the BR revenue earning fleet as it was at time. Vacuum fitted and unfitted standard wagons were then soon to be phased out now that new air braked designs were appearing, albeit slowly, and in the private owner sector. Despite that, many big four and BR standard designs were still in daily use. Following popular demand, this title was reprinted in 2009.

Price £14.95
96 pp, 215 mm x 273 mm, soft bound with card cover, over 140 black and white photographs

WORKING WAGONS Volume 2
1974 - 1979 by David Larkin

ISBN 0 9507960 7 7
This second volume in the Working Wagons series covers the period from 1974 to 1979 and examines the numerous changes which occurred to the BR freight wagon fleet in that time. These included the implementation of the T.O.P.S. computerised fleet management system, the rebuilding of much of the mineral fleet, the introduction of many new air braked wagon designs and the availability of Government subsidies in the form of Section 8 grants.

Price £11.95
96 pp, 215 mm x 273 mm, soft bound with card cover, over 140 black and white photographs

WORKING WAGONS Volume 3
1980 - 1984 by David Larkin

ISBN 0 9507960 2 X
The period between 1980 and 1984 was a particularly interesting one. The last survivors of the traditional wagon fleet could still be seen operating alongside the huge variety of newer air braked vehicles, the designs of which had reached an all time high. The years are memorable for the apparent renaissance in rail freight transport: an optimistic period which spawned many striking wagon types, although in the event, most were to survive only a few short years in service.

WORKING WAGONS Volume 4
1985 - 1992 by David Larkin

ISBN 0 9538448 4 6
The last volume of this pictorial review covers most of the final years of British Rail prior to privatisation and examines many of the interesting wagon designs still in service.Traditional vacuum-braked types are virtually extinct and many modern air-braked types are being rebuilt in order to meet the transportation demands of freight customers in ever changing markets. Of particular note in this period is the gradual growth in the use of of vehicles of continental design and origin.
